Pelik

Kadang kadang aku tertanya tanya berapa umur aku..
siap buat pengiraan 2011 tolak 1989..
hmm..
pelik...
22 tahun uh?
macam tak percaya betapa pantas masa berlalu.....
kadang2 aku ingin menjadi lebih serious..
lawak2 bodoh diketepikan..

Now... jom begin...

Why I Choose Bachelor of Construction Management?

This is not a tale of any fairy tale prince charming, but it is just Sulaiman Ghazali’s true short story. Story of why he chooses Bachelor of Construction Management as his path to the future.

For the beginning, let’s reminisce the past. Go back to the past 6 years, where that time he was only 16 year old high school boy who knew nothing about Building Construction, Architecture, Engineering, and even Interior Designing, as his family has no such background to give him at least a bit of clue regarding those important field-of-life. For information, his father is a full time seller at wet market.

The journey began after he took Peperiksaan Menengah Rendah (PMR) in Form 3, where every student shall choose what course to take for Form 4 level. In his school, there were Accountancy class, Biology class, Economic class, and Engineering Technology class which he can decide by himself. Frankly speaking, he had no interest in Economic and Accountancy class as they were ‘number-based’ class. While Biology class is far too advance from his level. Well, at least he was interested in engineering drawing which led him to Engineering Technology class in form 4 and also in form 5.

As he been through two years in Engineering Technology class, those were the first time he got the basic knowledge about construction. Engineering Technology class covered topics of civil works, mechanical works, engineering works, and a little bit of construction works which he found those as interesting to learn. During that time, he started to get an idea of what is construction, at least in a small perspective.

So forth, after announcement of Sijil Peperiksaan Menengah (SPM) result, he only managed to get an average result. He absolutely knew that certificate the only ticket to the future. A wise decision to choose the right course to further study for Diploma level in higher institution should be made, otherwise the chance might lose. Therefore, during the application to the higher institution via online system, he chose courses which available in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He thought of taking something related to construction. There were 6 options available. The first course he chose was Diploma in Town and Regional Planning, and then Diploma in Architecture, Diploma in Building, Diploma in Civil Engineering, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, and the last choice was Diploma in Hotel Management.

After few weeks of waiting, the application result was published online. The excitement during checking the result turned to disappointment. None of the choices were succeeded. However, he had another chance by filling an Appeal form. In the application form, only two options were given. Therefore, again, he gambled the fate by choosing Diploma in Building as the first choice and Diploma in Town and Regional Planning as the second choice. Soon after, he got Diploma in Building course for three years in UiTM Perak campus. Without knowing what awaited him in the future, he grabbed the chance.

The true journey was actually begun there. Diploma in Building also included six months industrial training which teaches him the true figure of construction industry. Construction industry is not as simple as manufacturing industry and not as easy as retailing industry. Construction industry is like playing a dice. The dice is squared and numbered. Square is the ‘path’, number is the ‘luck’. We are the one who throw the dice and gamble to succeed to get the highest number, 6, yet the result sure is nothing as we expected. To tell the truth, construction industry is much unexpected. A good planning skill and management ability are required in order to survive.

Therefore, the best course suited him after Diploma in Building is Bachelor of Construction Management which educate undergraduate specifically in management. However, he started to think, could he able to survive in Construction Industry? What will he be after graduated? Does he have all the requirements before jump into the real construction world outside there? Even though he achieved good results during the Diploma, but he thought that he needs some skills that differentiate him with others who are in the same field as him. He doubted himself even after he has gone this far. Therefore, he seeks for the answer.

Luckily, he found an article regarding Career Opportunity from UiTM website and he thought it is very useful and helpful to fight with his doubt.

"Career prospects for students graduating with a degree in Construction Management are highly favorable.

The course prepares graduates for wide range of careers in the area of the design and management of the construction process. The attributes of graduates of the program: links with professional work in practice and professional body affiliation (CIOB accredited centre).

The transferable skills that graduate have acquired during the degree course, gives opportunities for graduates to employ in diverse and interesting range of activities outside construction management to complement the industry. With the rising urban population, opportunities for construction management graduates should be available in years to come.

Graduates of Construction Management program are highly sought after as project managers, site managers, construction managers, project coordinators and development managers and can command good salaries and career prospects."

From the article, he believed that the course could lead him through the path of construction industry. Construction Management concerning all aspects in construction industry, it starts from Building Estimating, to Building Construction until Construction Law. Hence, there should be no worries in order to survive in the industry.

Now end the short story and back to the reality. Construction industry is a wide range industry. There are many divisions in construction such as Building Services, Building Science, Construction Technology, Building Maintenance, and Construction Management. There might have even a tiny chance waiting outside there. Indeed, they are waiting, but it is me to seek it.

What to be, what is required, everything has been clearly clarified. What is the matter now is my own self. I need confidence. Confidence is essential because it defines oneself. Low confidence means lost faith especially from people who are working with us. Since I am a leader-wannabe in construction industry, I must ascertain what I am doing. Otherwise, people will doubt with my ability. Therefore, I hope Bachelor of Construction Management could improve my confidence level from ‘zero to hero’.

Today, since I am a Bachelor of Construction Management undergraduate, I want to seriously get involve in construction community nationwide. A good relationship with parties involve in construction will give a lot of benefit. There are many parties involve in construction industry such as Architect, Engineer, Building Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, and Interior Designer. Get to be acquainted and get in touch with them in certain way could extend the link of contact where they are all either directly or indirectly need each other. For that reason, Bachelor of Construction Management is the first step I am taking to gain knowledge and gather contact as much as I can where this course also requires me to meet people in industry especially for doing case studies and dissertation.

Most importantly, in the future if I start my new own company, I want to get high class license from Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor Malaysia (PKK), register with Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) and even acknowledged by Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), so I will not become another mere low class contractor in Malaysia especially when I am representing a Bumiputera contractor. Thus, another step to seize this future dream is by doing well in Bachelor of Construction Management.

Three years for diploma and two years for degree level are surely a lot of time. It will be wasted if this is not been taken seriously. Even though everything seems to be like I am just going with the flow, I will do what it takes in order to success in this path. I am hoping that I am doing the right decision by choosing construction as my major path. Even though there are obstacles and difficulties will be encountered in the future, well, there is nothing can be achieved by just sitting down, shaking legs and doing nothing.

At last but not least, for the time being, I only able to dream my future, where the reality is I never know if it will come true. Though, there is a path in front of me right now that will lead me the way - the path which I am currently walk in to, Bachelor of Construction Management. Well, let all of it be the purpose of my studies. What is the best is I want to focus on the present where I am standing right now by doing my best in this course. I will never give up as I believe chances are always in front of me.
